Today’s modern day curator is a curator of knowledge. We have come to rely on the best to tell us what is good and what isn’t. Their history of shares heightens their status in some cases to social connoisseur, a title not easily earned.

I always get so much out of reading Karen's curation and reviews here on Scoopit and this is no exception. No matter how long I've been reviewing or curating content, I am always reminded of something I should do to make my work better for my brand and for my audience.


Here's what caught my attention:


"When you’re curating content you are telling a story–your story–through the material you curate, the reviews you write, and the voice you bring to your topic".

 

When think of your curation as an ongoing story, you too can realize similar benefits.


So how can your curation reflect and tell your story?


Here is one of her six great tips:


What kind of a voice do you want to bring to the table? How do you want to be perceived? What is important to emphasize? 


Finding your voice is critical when curating content.    


Have a point of view. People want you to have a point of view.


* Your point of view will help others think critically about the content to offer them.


* Your voice and the tone you bring to your curation also reflect your personality. Your readers want you to be real, authentic, and fallible.


*They want to know who you are.

I selected this article because it reaffirms what many of us already know but it's still good to see this in writing: Content curation and Media Curation (a mix of  machine aggregation and Human Curation) are starting to pick up steam.


Here are some highlights:

The author says and I agree with him:



**"The value will be in the expertise of the curator, people will not read junk, and the best of the best curators will create digital domination with vibrant communities".


There is also a great quote from Fred Wilson's AVB blog in which he details what he would do if he were starting the Village Voice now:


**I would not print anything. I would not hire a ton of writers. I would build a website and a mobile app (or two or three). I would hire a Publisher and a few salespeople.


**I would hire an editor and a few journalists. And then I’d go out and find every blog, twitter, facebook, flickr, youtube, and other social media feed out there that is related to downtown NYC


**and I would pull it all into an aggregation system where my editor and journalists could cull through the posts coming in, curate them, and then publish them

He couldn't be more right. 

The rest of his article, dating back to November, offers good insight into what the 1% of former Google Reader was really doing and what they are looking for now that it is gone.

At what point does the exponential increase in content production make the cost of trying to grab and hold attention no longer cost-effective?

Quite a stir was made a week ago, when Mark Schaefer published his Content Shock article on the businessesgrow blog.

 

A paraphrasing of the question he asked was, ‘At what point does the exponential increase in content production make the cost of trying to grab and hold attention no longer cost-effective?’

 

The topic resonated me as well as many others and the responses were swift, including  Shel Holtz, Sonia Simone of Copyblogger and Marty Smith, the first two of which are discussed in the piece published in curatti.com (Marty’s piece was published too late to be included).

 

 

We don’t feel that Content Shock is something that any of us need to be concerned over. 

 

Let’s not forget that

 

As content continues to grow, search keeps pace by constantly improving. “

 

Semantic Search may be beyond most people now, but it will become a part of everyone’s life even if in the same mysterious way that a car engine helps that wonderful machine convey us from point A to point B.”

 

And amongst those who stand to gain from the situation are:

 

“Discerning Curators who understand the needs of their readers because they are consumers of the same content, only sharing what blows them away!”

 

… a statement which is at least partly backed up here by an end user perspective:

 

When I need to research something, I go to a few trusted sources and get what I want, when I want it.”

 

 

The message to readers is: “If someone is out there filtering the deluge of articles that you might otherwise have to work your own way through…. it removes the burden of you having to deal with the ever growing content mountain.”

 

So is Content Shock real?  With all the excellent curators and filtering tools available ....... Only for those who insist on reading every source for themselves

Yesterday I selected a post by Elad Gil who talked about Pinterest changing the way we share and consume information on the web.  Today I have selected another article by Don Reisinger  for Cnet News - digital home, who says, "let's not jump to conclusions here and has more to say about this.


I do admit I'm participating on many betas because I feel the need to stay informed. I'm not usually drawn to every new thing that comes along but somehow, Pinterest has caught my eye.


Let's take a look at why Pinterest is becoming one of the most popular social networks, what's really happening here?


Here's what caught my attention:


**Pinterest so far has been the only company to distinguish itself. Late last month, Experian Hitwise, a company that monitors consumer behavior on the Web, reported that Pinterest had 11 million visits during the week ended December 17, jumping 4,000 percent compared with six months earlier.


**The massive bump catapulted Pinterest to the 10th spot in Experian's listing of the most popular social networks, just behind Yelp. Experian also discovered that Pinterest has found a loyal following in women.


**In the past three months, women have accounted for 58 percent of its userbase, and nearly 60 percent of those women are between the ages of 25 and 44.


**Opinions are mixed over why Pinterest has been able to attract such a large audience.


**Is it the service's solid design? Is it the attention it has received from media outlets shocked by its growth?


**Is it, perhaps, the fact that it recently raised $26 million from venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, giving it bundles of cash to play with? It could be all that.


**But Gil thinks it might also have something to do with its ease-of-use.


**"Pinterest was one of the first sites to take push button content generation (via bookmarklets and 're-pinning') and structure it into sets of curated content called 'boards


**This allowed users to collect content from across the Web, as well as from other users on the site.


Reisinger ends his article with a word of caution:


**"Pinterest has yet to offer its service publicly. And once it finally moves beyond its invite-only phase, the company will be truly tested."


Followed by the question: 


**"will the mainstream Web user who typically joins the social game after early adopters pick up their invites, find value in it?"


** Chances are, we'll get the answers to those questions later this year.
