As I said, I've seen many pieces on curation but if you're like me, everytime I read about this, I always find something new or am reminded of ways I can polish what I'm doing.

Beth Kanter wrote a very complete and interesting piece in NTEN's latest edition of their quarterly journal for non-profit leaders. You have to download the journal but it's worth it and it's free (you just need to register). 


Jan Gordon: I want to thank Beth not only for another outstanding piece but for the mention, it's greatly appreciated.


I agree with Guillaume, Beth Kanter knows what she's talking about and her article is definitely worth reading.

"It's been fascinating for me to see how non-profits seem to embrace Social Media in general and Content Curation in particular - Beth of course being a key advocate in that move.


The broader take-away that I see for those of us in all sorts of organizations, as independant professionals or SMB-owners is the validation it brings to the model. When tightly-budgeted NPO's embrace a practice as a group, you can bet they're not wasting their scarce resources on a hype. They have to be efficient and as Beth puts it in the article: "Putting content curation into practice is part art form, part science, but mostly about daily practice. By Pawan Deshpande, CEO, HiveFire.  "Last year my company, HiveFire Inc., shared the results from our B2B Marketing Trends survey".


Here's what they found and found:


**82 percent are incorporating content curation


Click through to this recent post titled “Content May Be King” for more content curation definitions and trends.)


**The fact that this represents a notable increase (up from 48 percent) from the Content Curation Adoption survey that we issued earlier that year sent a strong message that curation is gaining favor amongst marketers.


For our Curation Habits Report, we analyzed over one million articles curated by our customers to identify:


which curation methods drive the highest engagement rates and identified some interesting trends.


Here are a few things they found:


Original Content vs. Third-Party Content


On average, approximately 87 percent of curated content are third-party articles and 13 percent are original content.


**Additionally, on sites where there is a mix of original and third-party content


**original content receives approximately 17 percent more click-thru activity 


**Curated sites that have between 16-30 percent original generate the most pageviews.


Capturing Reader Attention


Throughout the analysis, it became clear that there are several ways that curators can draw attention to their content.


**For starters, articles that included a picture generated 47 percent more click-thru activity than articles without. 


Medium snippets (between 141 and 1,200 characters) generate 20 percent more click-thru activity than small snippets (140 characters or less) for any given curated site.

In case you missed this article, I'm reposting it today because it's definitely worth your while if you're using content to build your business. Conversationagent not only gives you some great tips for creating compelling content but also shares examples of people who are doing a good job with each suggestion.


These ideas can be used for content curators as well - to create buzz and build an audience, providing "context" is what sets you apart from others - these tips are ways to accomplish that.

Here are a few things that caught my attention:


**. Make digestible bits of advice in micro-interactions gain big impact. Kellye Crane built a community for #soloPR practitioners off a Twitter chat filled with useful advice.


** Create a new list. People like to see where things stack against each other. By far, the most popular list is still the one Todd And created and AdAge took over.


** Give away secrets and tips to help others become more effective. Adam Singer is very generous in that regard.


** Teach something new or from a new perspective. Kathy Sierra has been able to do that on a topic that for many was considered not quite appealing

.

** Inspire people to take action and change the world. Entrepreneur Chris Guilleabeau is a good example of that.


** Be opinionated about future trends. That's a trait that is best exemplified by Robert Scoble.


** Track and review future trends from behind the scenes. A good guide is Louis Gray.


**Create a conversation around a social object. That's what Hugh MacLeod does.


** Become the expert hub on a subject matter. The consistent "go to" person for branding is the team at Branding Strategy Insider.

I saw an article like this from Christopher Penn over the summer, he uses his iPad and flipboard to do this. I'm using buffer and find one of my best Twitter tools - if I can discipline my self to use it. The Chrome plugin helps a lot. But one of the things I've noticed is that I don't systemmatically read blogs as much as I did a few years back. Now, I look for particular Twitter lists, honed keywords, and specific sources. I need to get my discipline back around this ...

Compendium, a content marketing firm conducted a study of more than 200 companies to determine how social media professionals may optimize their engagement with both business-to-business-to-consumer conversations.


What they found is consistent with what Ted Nguyen has experienced and he has demonstrated that he clearly knows what he's doing

Here are some highlights:


"My experience in sharing more than 21,000 tweets and Facebook posts to my more than 82,000 Twitter followers and Facebook friends is consistent with the study’s findings"

.

**I recommend the hours between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Pacific Time) or 1 to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) are the best times for Twitter and Facebook to optimize social engagement engagement.


**I find that tweets shared earlier in the week do better than those sent later in the week. I also have discovered that Facebook posts do best Wednesday early afternoon.


**if you look at Ted's social shares, they run around the clock. he tries his best to engage with people in real time or near real time.

**mix curated content with original content. In fact,  curating is a great way to extend your own site, but only in addition to—not instead of—your original content

I’m sure a lot of you guys have looked into curation software available ...

Obviously with the radically different price points they all do different things, but here’s the gist – a whole lot of this you can do for free.


Step OneDefine your Parameters

Define your parameters by where you want the goods to go. Make sure everything is accessible from the beginning so you can leverage your curated content efficiently from the start.


Step TwoChoose your Weapons

e.g. Timely.is; G+ and FB


Step ThreeBe Intentional with your Schedule

I can’t speak to your industry/niche but I can tell you that when I do my curation at somewhere between 6 and 8am EST I find a goldmine of posts that are brand-flipping-new


Step FourBe Crazy Time Sensitive

I make sure to only curate content that is timely [less than 1% of the time curate something more than 24 hours old]

Open up a google search and type in “content marketing” at the beginning of my day, and set it to the last 24 hours.


Step FiveBe Consistent

As long as you are curating the same general stuff over and over it will work for you.


Notice: Steps 1-5 are all about the setup or protocol. Steps 6-9 are the actual daily work.


Step SixPrepare for Battle

Open windows to the following places:

Google search
Timely.is
WP dashboard to my curation site
Google +
Facebook
Twitter
I also have a Word document open


Step SevenGet Rolling

e.g. search for the term “content marketing” in the last 24 hours as shown above; grab 5 or 6 posts that are relevant and make tweets about them and put them on timely/buffer/scoopit


Step EightNatural Overflow

Doing twitter first thing after curation is great, if you have the time.

20-30 minutes after you have your automated posts in place to interact with your feed, clean out the spam tweeps, follow back the real people, etc.


Step NineUse what you Learn

Use your curation is as the basis for your own blogs

Not regurgitation, but rather letting your new-found knowledge fuel your next post. Or, add to the list of blog ideas you have on a running list somewhere.


Setting aside this 45 minutes a day to get the most relevant pieces of content your industry has to offer can not only fill your feeds, but it can also fuel your entire day. And it should, because you should be talking about the latest things in your industry.

Some great tips. Would you also spend the time commenting on the curated posts? I know there are some who believe that it is a necessity and others who feel there is no need as you are merely helping others to filter the noise. I try to mix it up depending on time available.

I like this analogy/metaphor. It is easy and quick to make feathers from your bricks, but the bricks take time. Can a curated collection of feathers be made into a brick? :-)

I'm glad you liked the article! I love your question, I do think a curated collection of feathers around a particular theme can be turned into a brick. What comes to mind, if you're distilling the comments from the posts (feathers) it's possible that this could evolve into a (brick) research reports, white papers, the possibilities are endless:-)

What comes to mind is that a smashed brick is a lot of feathers .. and that you can lead them back to the brick ... for example, I work with some advocacy folks who have these huge bricks called policy papers. They could tweet key points w/links back to the papers on Twitter. Have them cued up for a month in advance .. as you say the techniques are endless .. What I found most helpful was the objectives and metrics ..

I selected this piece today because it is timely and relevant, social media is part of the equation but the focus should be on social business, which is the bigger picture. It's important to package your content and repurpose it to fit the social network(s) where your audience resides. 


In this interview with McKinsey and Compay, John Battelle, founder & chairman of Federated Media Publishing says.....


**Marketers need to shift their mindset from being a publisher to engaging an audience.


To paraphrase:


Marketers are starting to see an ecosystem of paid, owned and earned media that they're very interested in feeding through social interactions and content marketing.


Here's what caught my attention:


Marketers have always created content, print and radio ads, 30-second spots, display banners


****But they never have really seen these elements as an integrated corpus of content living in a digitally driven ecosystem


**Marketers need to become engagement publishers


**"Increasingly, [marketers] are realizing that this social media space involves an ongoing conversation. Assets never really go away."


**Building conversation “inventory” at scale


I agree that all brands probably should be on Facebook, but what you really need is an integrated strategy that has – at its root – the brand's own domain, independent from any platform other than the Internet itself.


Measuring the success of conversational engagement


These things are very hard to directly measure from a simple click. And often, as we know, the people who click are not the people you want as customers anyway.


**So you need a bridge to that kind of insight that gives a media buyer the justification to say that this new technology is worth the investment.


**Marketers have been very interested in understanding how their content is amplified in the past few years


**Now there is technology that allows us to automatically collect and present this data (More in detail in interview)


**The best companies create communities of interest that are independent:


**they are rooted in the independent Web, with expressions on Facebook, or as an iPhone or Android app – those all become instances of their brand.


** Companies should create a circulatory system through which they can promote different aspects of their messaging and interactions with their community.


**If you're going to be a brand with a publishing approach to marketing, you must have an independent taproot that isn’t controlled by anyone but you. 


Put out your branches and feelers everywhere. Integrate that experience and let your content and messaging flow through it.

****Industry experts and analysts have begun to focus on content curation as a key marketing strategy.


**** “Content curation has emerged as one of the highest potential enterprise tools for B2B marketers to draw and engage specific audiences,” said Susan McKittrick of the Patricia Seybold Group, who has conducted several in-depth reports examining the growth of content curation within the realm of marketing.


In February, 2011, **(It will be interesting to see what these statistics are today as we approach 2012). HiveFire surveyed more than 150 marketing professionals; our data supported McKittrick’s insights:


**Forty-eight percent of marketers are already employing content curation in some form or another


**58 percent of those surveyed who are curating content are mixing both original and third-party content, which solidifies the curator’s credibility among its audience


**Robert Davis, PJA Advertising’s senior vice president of digital marketing, believes that employing a content-curation strategy--in particular, curating third-party content--is essential for increasing a brand’s influence and position as a thought leader in its space.

**You need to put yourself into the mindset of a publisher by writing blog articles, producing podcasts, and authoring e-books and whitepapers.


**It helps marketers find, highlight, build on, and share relevant, timely information of keen interest to an audience.


****Curated content becomes the source information for lead nurturing, social media engagement, thought leadership positioning, community cultivation, and drawing organic search traffic.”


**When creating content for your brand, you are helping to educate your prospects only through vendor content.


**Without content from outside experts and peer groups, they are left on their own, out of your reach, to find it themselves.


**While most marketers understand the need to produce content, there is more that can be done to position your brand as the “go-to” source for your industry.


**Curation can help marketers produce and share better, prospect-engaging content by presenting a broader selection of peer, vendor, and expert sources in the context of a company’s brand.
